The Supervisory Assistant Nurse Manager position is located at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center Houston, TX in the Rehabilitation Extended Care Line, Neurology and Rehabilitation-NU 2A. *Job Announcement amended to extend the closing date from 9/17/2021 to 9/24/2021. Duties include but are not limited to: Responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimal care (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). Assists the Nurse Manager to direct the Nursing staff to provide a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process based on the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice. Demonstrates consistent clinical competence in providing nursing care. Assists staff with utilizing equipment correctly. Assists staff to recognize subtle changes in patient's condition and responds timely, choosing the correct interventions. Demonstrates evidence of critical thinking skills in identifying, analyzing, and resolving patient care problems on the unit. Works collaboratively with the nurse manager in the management of patient care and programs. Provides oversight of the unit and staff activities in the absence of the Nurse Manager. Accurately documents in the medical record patient findings, assessments, and care provided. Ensure that documentation is technically informative, complete, accurate, consistent, concise, and timely. Evaluates and documents patient response to interventions and progress towards attainment of goals and expected outcomes. Revises interdisciplinary plan of care based upon on-going patient assessment and evaluation. Uses the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and the Bar Coded Medication Administration (BCMA) software per policy. Effectively functions as the Assistant Nurse Manager that guides and directs others who provide patient care. Makes assignments and directs activities of other unit staff, (RNs, LPNs, students, PSAs, other team members). Assigns patient care responsibilities based upon patient needs and competencies of staff. Organizes and completes own assignments in a safe and timely manner, assisting team members as necessary. Provides direction to staff for unit activities in meeting patient care needs. Ensures that delegated tasks as assigned are completed by other staff. Ensures the physician and/or the nurse manager is notified of untoward events involving patients and staff, either by assigned RN or by self. Uses a team approach to identify, analyze, and resolve patient care problems that result in improved patient outcomes. Demonstrates grade-appropriate and consistent critical thinking skills. Promotes, advocates for and strives to protect the health, safety and rights of the patient (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). Maintains professional boundaries with patients, families, and employees. Behavior as a role model is transparent and above reproach. Identifies potential and actual problems involving resources and/or safety. Takes action to avert or manage the situation in a manner which meets the needs of patients in a safe/therapeutic manner. Effectively assists the nurse manager in managing unit resources which results in decreased waste, improved efficiencies and/or decreased liabilities while maintaining or enhancing care and practice. Effectively develops the time schedule in a timely manner per the union contract 4. Monitors workload and adjusts assignments as needed. Participates in the interviewing process for staff selection, fact findings, counseling staff and evaluating staff performance. Demonstrates leadership with compliance with infection control practices, such as hand washing and wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment. Demonstrates leadership in safe work practices. Complies with safety rules and regulations for safe job performance and fire protection. Practices safe body mechanics, uses mechanical devices, and/or requests help when needed in moving, lifting, or turning patients to prevent injury to patient, self or others. Conserves resources effectively by using supplies and equipment in a responsible manner Ensure employees follow appropriate standard operating procedures related to the equipment, devices, and work practices that impact or have the potential to impact the environment. Complies with relevant environmental regulations, Executive Orders, and Green Environmental Management Systems (GEMS) initiatives. Leads within a framework of a High Reliability Organization with a culture of safety founded on a systems approach to developing health care solutions based on prevention, not punishment, with collective mindfulness.
