The Staff Nurse is directly responsible to the Unit Manager of the assigned unit. He/she is responsible for promoting and insuring quality patient care through the utilization of the nursing process, quality improvement, and approved standards of care and standards of practice. Practice: Demonstrates competency using the nursing process in providing care for patients. Direct others who provide care. (1) Demonstrates technical competency in the care of patients with more complex needs. (2) Assigns and directs activities of supportive personnel (i.e., NAs, students, and other team members). (3) Demonstrates the ability to assume the Charge Nurse role. (4) Identifies safety issues within the unit and assures follow up. (5) Assures that policies and procedures are followed in the management of high-risk patients (i.e., suicidal patient, falls, choking, restraints, oxygen dependent, tracheostomy, etc.). b. Ethics: Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual nursing judgments and actions. Acts as a patient advocate. (1) Recognizes ethical issues in provision of care. (2) Takes responsibility for own practice. (3) Identifies resources for patient/family rights. (4) Applies principles consistent with the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics. c. Resource Utilization: Plans and organizes care based on patient needs and provider competencies to assure safe, efficient and cost-effective care. (1) Assigns patient care to appropriate skill level required by patient needs. (2) Assists peers and co-workers in establishing care priorities that ensure patient safety and effective care delivery.
