The Assistant Chief Sterilizing Processing Service (SPS) Registered Nurse reports to the Chief of SPS. This position is located in the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center Houston, TX in the SPS Services. The Assistant Chief adheres to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice. S/he demonstrates leadership in providing and improving the provision of nursing care activities. S/he manages and guides staff development. Facilitates training of various aspects of SPS and RME. Compiles records and reports relating to operational responsibilities and provides timely reports to SPS Chief. S/he attends assigned meetings to represent SPS and provides written reports and updates to the SPS Chief. Collaborates with the Chief of SPS and various departments to promote quality patient care and resource utilization. Assists with implementing and maintaining Federal mandates and directives related to SPS and RME. Demonstrates competencies specific to clinical setting in operative care line, clinics, sterile processing and operating room. S/he provides coverage for the Chief of SPS in his/her absence and adjusts work schedule to facilitate the coverage. S/he compiles records and reports relating to operational responsibilities and provides timely reports to SPS Chief. Accurately collects, enters, validates, and analyses data. Recognizes the need to communication and disseminate the data/information in a timely manner. Participates in interdisciplinary clinical groups for exchange of information/data. Identifies clinical issues requiring resolution, i.e., cause and effect of negative outcomes, which impact patient care, nursing practice and/or productivity of SPS. Acts as an advocate for patient and staff in addressing ethical issues. Understands the process dealing with ethical issues and how to implement. Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual nursing judgments and actions. Accurately collects, enters, validates, and analyses data. Recognizes the need to communication and disseminate the data/information in a timely manner. Participates in interdisciplinary clinical groups for exchange of information/data. Identifies clinical issues requiring resolution, i.e., cause and effect of negative outcomes, which impact patient care, nursing practice and/or productivity of SPS. Knowledgeable of evidence based findings, which is reflected in selecting final products for SPD and RMEs. Challenges self and staff to produce and share at least one lessons learned from an event and action. Awareness of regulatory standards for application, production and evaluation of care and practice, especially all that applies to SPS and RMEs. Guides and directs the assessment of staff's needs based on professional standards of care and practice, as well as VHA Directives and Handbooks. All other duties that are dictated by patient care. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 7:30 am - 4:30 pm rotating days ,evenings and nights.
